If there's even a shred of validity to a Kansas City radio report that Elijah Johnson will transfer before the start of the spring semester, the Kansas guard certainly isn't ready to admit it.
Johnson adamantly shot down the story Tuesday night in the wake of the Jayhawks' 81-68 victory over Memphis in the Jimmy V Classic.
"It's irritating when people put words in your mouth," Johnson told the University Daily Kansan. "I'm a Jayhawk until they kick me out. And I don't think they're kicking me out any time soon, so I've got 2 1/2 more years."
It's easy to see why there has been speculation about Johnson's future considering playing time has been scarce for the sophomore so far at Kansas. The Las Vegas native entered college as Rivals.com's No. 24 recruit in the Class of 2009, yet he logged a mere 6.6 minutes a night as a freshman and his 15.5 minutes a game this year are likely to dwindle once Josh Selby becomes eligible later this month.
Johnson offered a glimpse of what he's capable of Tuesday night against Memphis with seven points on 3-for-3 shooting and three assists in 21 minutes. It was a strong enough performance to warrant more playing time, yet that will be difficult in Kansas' crowded backcourt.
Not many NBA guys know a great deal about Elijah Johnson, but that's going to change if he keeps playing like this," tweeted Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com. "We're pretty high on him. Problem for Elijah Johnson is that Josh Selby is going to come in & take all his minutes. Not exactly sure how he's going to build a resume."
