At this point in the coaching career of Mike Shanahan, we probably shouldn't be surprised by curious personnel decisions. After all, we're talking about a head coach who once found a running back at a mall kiosk.
But still, Friday's news is stunning: Washington is expected to bench Donovan McNabb in favor of Rex Grossman in Week 15.
The decision was first reported by Kelli Johnson of CSN Washington, then later confirmed by NFL Network's Jason La Canfora and the Washington Post. It's legit. This is not a drill. La Canfora added that Redskins players are rather upset, and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is now "facing credibility issues in that locker room." (Although that was probably a pre-existing condition for Kyle).
Rex, of course, has been a turnover-prone mess throughout his NFL career. In 39 games over eight seasons, he's thrown 33 TD passes and 36 interceptions. He's also fumbled 20 times, losing 11. And he was a complete disaster in the Super Bowl, just in case you'd forgotten.
Grossman's only live action so far this year occurred in Week 8, in a loss at Detroit. He entered the game inside the final two minutes and immediately lost a fumble — then watched as Ndamukong Suh returned it for a touchdown. You won't find very many reasonable observers (or Washington players) who think Grossman is a better option than McNabb, even if Donovan has suffered through a disappointing season. This is an odd move to say the least. Both quarterbacks find themselves in untenable situations, surrounded by an angry mob of teammates.
Here's your fantasy action plan: Upgrade the Dallas defense. They're at home, facing one of the league's lowest scoring teams, with a reckless quarterback behind center. It's tough to feel good about any member of the Washington receiving corps right now, although we all know that Rex likes to blindly chuck the deep ball. (Be ready, Anthony Armstrong). Ryan Torain remains a safe bet, coming off a 24-carry game.
