Vince Carter Avoids Surgery, Remains Sidelined Indefinitely

Vince CarterPHOENIX -- Vince Carter was in his full practice uniform on Wednesday, even though he wasn't able to actually practice. The newness of the Suns colors, and especially the new number, are going to take some getting used to.

"I still can't get used to this, I'm sorry," Carter said, after briefly interrupting a reporter's line of questioning. "It just feels heavier. 25 feels heavier than 15."

Carter, now in his 13th NBA season, had worn the number 15 ever since he came into the league. But Robin Lopez currently wears 15 for the Suns, and even if Carter were to put together an attractive compensation package to persuade Lopez to give it up, league rules prevent players from changing numbers midseason.

"Like today, I walked in and (the jersey) was laying on the table," Carter said. "I kind of moved it aside. I was walking around going, where's my jersey? Oh, there it is. That's me -- 25."

Carter then turned his attention to Lopez.

"Look at this," Carter exclaimed, pointing to Lopez still getting in work on the practice court. "He doesn't even wear it! It's like, blank!"

Lopez was indeed wearing a numberless jersey, but at least he was practicing. A knee injury kept Carter on the sidelines Wednesday, and may keep him out of the team's next game and beyond.
