The football season may be over, but some top highlights are still trickling out on to ye ole Internet, as we were alerted to earlier this week by a loyal reader. In this case, the highlight in question had to be one of the more impressive touchdown leaps of the 2010 season.
The player you see vaulting into the end zone on the video above is Pearland (Texas) High defensive back Myles Kanipes, who picked off a pass from West Brook (Texas) High quarterback Bruce Reyes and returned it 46 yards for the opening touchdown in Pearland's 51-22 rout in the second round of the Texas state playoffs.
"We win every game and they always say it is because our offense scores more," Kanipes told the Houston Chronicle of the touchdown return. "Since playoffs started, our defense has gotten a lot better."
Of course, the Pearland defense kept getting better, eventually culminating in a Class 5A title game shock victory over national title contender Euless Trinity (Texas) High.
While most of Kanipes' touchdown return wasn't necessarily the stuff of top highlight reels, the leap into the end zone certainly was. The senior son of Pearland's defensive coordinator took off on a straight line toward the end zone but appeared to be cut off by a West Brook offensive player to his right and left. That's when he went airborne for the final 4 yards, eventually completing about 280 of the 360 degrees needed for a complete body revolution.
Before you question the length of that leap, check out the yard line from which Kanipes takes off. He leaps from the 4 and lands a full yard into the end zone. Ladies and gentlemen, that's a near 5-yard flight path.
Kanipes' return might not be Pearland's most notable play of the season -- that honor has to be reserved for the fantastic state championship Dead-Man trick play -- but it was still one of the most notable interception returns we came across nationwide.
