If Graeme McDowell had his way, professional golf tournaments would be 54 holes. That's because over the last five events, a trend has started to creep into G-Mac's game ... and it's not the kind that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.
For every three good rounds he's played recently, McDowell has followed up solid, or stellar, golf with at least one score that probably wouldn't be good enough to win the first flight of your club championship.
Taking into account his last five tournaments, McDowell's scoring average during that span has been 68.7, an average that should have him in contention in every tournament he enters. But the number is a little misleading. That's because it leaves out rounds of 74, 74, 81, 75, and his 7-over 77 at the British Open on Friday, a number that rendered his 2-under 68 in the first round meaningless, and now has McDowell headed home for the weekend.
Those five rounds are certainly troubling, moreso because he's posted at least one big number in each of the past five events. But McDowell isn't the only one with this problem; Tiger Woods has made a habit doing the exact same thing for the last year or so.
It's impossible to put your finger on why G-Mac continues to ruin a perfectly good tournament finish with a high round -- maybe he gets too relaxed, after a good round, and takes his foot off the pedal -- but this problem doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon. And until he can put his finger on the big issue, we very well could see this trend continue for the foreseeable future.
