Headlinin’: Pac-10 tweaks, Autotunes logo for Pac-12 transition

Making the morning rounds.

? Remedial numerology as design. Considering the Pac-10 made kind a big deal over the rollout of its new "shield" logo as part of wider rebranding initiative last summer, it's no surprise that the conference decided to basically stick to the same logo for its evolution into the Pac-12 later this year. The new effort, unveiled Wednesday on the conference's YouTube channel, keeps the shield, the fonts, the mountain-or-wave? Rorschach test in the center and the "Blue Period" color palette, merely swapping out the '0' in '10' for a '2.' Which, OK: Don't fix what ain't broke.

But if that doesn't get you out of your seat for hot Pac-12 action (Paction?), surely the infectious verve of 20 very excited student-athletes and one guy with a fetish for Autotune will do the trick:

Embarrassing, maybe, but still only half as embarrassing as the "Leaders and Legends" thing in the Big Ten. [Pac-10.org]

? Recruiting giveth, recruiting taketh away. As expected, five-star defensive tackle signee Delvon Simmons, headliner of North Carolina's 2011 recruiting class, is effectively a free agent again after being granted a release from his scholarship on Wednesday — just two days after the Tar Heels picked up another hyped defensive lineman, prodigal son Brandon Willis, to fill the gap. Willis signed and enrolled at UNC last spring before (like Simmons) begging out of his scholarship, but has decided to return east after a semester at UCLA to be closer to his sick grandmother. ? Don't come back now. Four now-former Auburn players arrested last week for armed robbery have been barred from campus, according to new bond provisions that also restrict the quartet from "harass[ing], annoy[ing] or otherwise commit[ing] any acts that would cause alarm toward any witnesses in this case, any law enforcement officials or any Auburn University officials or students." At least two of the players, Mike McNeil and Dakota Mosley, have already been released on $511,000 bail; the other two, Antonio Goodwin and Shaun Kitchens, remained in jail as of Wednesday morning. ? The new class. Rivals is halfway through its weeklong countdown of the first 12 five-star prospects in the class of 2012, a list that so far includes 16- and 17-year-olds Rivals' scouts have explicitly compared to DeSean Jackson, Eric Berry, Dwight Freeney and Tony Dorsett, among others. The most recent addition to the list is 6-foot-6, 220-pound Missouri wide receiver Dorial Beckham-Green (right), who shapes up as the next Julio Jones and has the early offer sheet to prove it. [Rivals]

? The Rap Sheet. Staying in the SEC, Ole Miss walk-on quarterback Evan Ingram, 19, was charged with two misdemeanors Monday for allegedly trying to walk out of a department store in Metairie, La., wearing a swimsuit underneath his pants. (Estimated value of swimsuit: $59.50.) Ingram was charged with theft of stolen goods and resisting arrest by flight. A Wayne Ingram, 20 (presumably Evan's brother), reportedly tried to walk out of the store wearing three pairs of shorts under his pants, and was charged with theft of goods, battery of a police officer and felony resisting police force. [Clarion Ledger]

Elsewhere, former Arkansas and USC quarterback Mitch Mustain, arrested on misdemeanor charges last month for allegedly trying to sell an undercover officer he'd met on Craigslist a knock-off version of Adderall, will avoid formal charges if he completes a pre-file diversion program. [L.A. Times]

Quickly… Pitt endures a day of "culture shock" in its first spring practice under the Todd Graham administration. … Meanwhile, Panther tight end Mike Cruz leaves the team in the wake of a suspension for violating team rules. … Remembering the many great juco transfers at Washington. … Alabama welcomes five early enrollees to spring practice. … Florida's first spring practice under Will Muschamp was quiet and easy. … And Nebraska coaches seem kind of excited about a 5-foot-7 walk-on running back coming off two ACL surgeries.
